UMS holds Active Week to deepen
understanding between EU and Malaysia
KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah
(UMS) held its inaugural EU Active Week of the MYEULINK with
European-embedded teaching week in an effort to deepen
understanding and strengthen relations between the European Union (EU) and Malaysia
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordon
formally launched MYEULINK on March 30 this year and was awarded
with a European Union grant of RM2.6 million. UMS was awarded

Malaysia: Changing conditions for palm oil
Malaysia’s palm oil industry may be able to reap the benefits of
unfavourable weather around the globe that is cutting into
harvest forecasts and pushing up prices, but the sector also has
to heed some storm warnings of its own if it is to maintain
production in the long term.

Malaysia: Banking to open
further
Malaysia’s government has
sought to play down concerns that opening up the country’s
finance industry to greater foreign participation will
squeeze local lenders, with senior ministers instead talking
up the benefits of a more competitive banking environment
and greater opportunities on offer in an expanding economy.

EU,
India see Asean deals
The
European Union expects to conclude a free trade deal with
Singapore by the end of next year and is likely to begin talks
with other Southeast Asian nations soon.
India hopes for an early conclusion to
talks on a deal for the free flow of investment and services
with the region.
The EU's trade commissioner, Karel de Gucht, said Europe
still hopes to ultimately reach a region-wide deal with the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

EU pushes links with ASEAN in Economic Ministers
meeting
EU Trade Commissioner
Karel De Gucht today finished a three-day visit to Da Nang
(Vietnam), where he was invited to the 42nd ASEAN Economic
Ministers Meeting (AEM). It’s the first time in three years
that an EU representative has participated in such a
meeting.
The visit presents an opportunity to intensify trade and
economic relations with ASEAN as a group, after the
negotiations for a region-to-region Free Trade Agreement
(FTA) were put on hold in 2009. Furthermore, the
Commissioner had a number of useful bilateral meetings with
Trade Ministers from various Asian countries.

Developing Asia's rapidly expanding
middle class is likely to assume the traditional role of the US
and Europe as primary global consumers and help rebalance the
