Issues

The most pertinent issues that has to be addressed in the Renewable Energy (RE) Policy are as follows:

  • Ensuring sustainability when selecting (RE) sources and technologies.
  • Feed in Tariff (FIT) that compensates the cost of project and varies according to technology utilized.
  • As Small Renewable Energy Programme (SREP) is limited to 10MW, the FIT should be structured to include projects of more than 10MW.
  • Encourage Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) that are favourable to the development of large scale RE projects.
  • Incentivise large Investors in People (IIPs) to take up RE projects, as part of their PPAs.
  • Consider Smart Grid Technology that intelligently regulates the power generation dispatch, in view of a more complex generation network when more small RE plants come online.
  • Encourage energy efficiency, both in demand and supply side.
  • Encourage utilization of latest technologies by providing attractive incentives.
  • Encourage investments in research and development of new technologies by providing attractive incentives.
  • Regulate supply of biomass fuel.
  • Explore and promote waste to energy technologies.
