ICT

Information, Communications and Technology is a highly dynamic and innovative industry that drives economic and social progress in all the economies around the world.

It is estimated that by the year 2015 over 5 billion people will be connected, and much of that is owed to the progress in the ICT sector. Malaysia has been one of the first developing countries to focus on ICT in order to boost economic growth. The government is trying to place Malaysia as a regional and global multimedia hub granting, for this reason, attractive incentives, mainly tax breaks, to MNCs.

However, a lot still needs to be done, and Malaysia risks losing the competitive advantage it has gained if it fails to react promptly. One of the most pressing issues is the low quality of broadband connectivity. Considering that ICT has a deep impact on a country's general economic performance, Malaysia is in need of technology and know-how in order to be able to progress, and it therefore needs to further open up the sector to foreign investors.

The Services Sector Project will therefore engage in a more intense dialogue with the authorities, with the objective of facilitating European access to Malaysia's ICT market, a market that is as rich in potential as it is in need of European expertise.
