The logistics sector is a crucial aspect for any economy that wishes to take advantage of the challenges resulting from globalisation. Roads, airports, railways and maritime transport are key infrastructure factors and influence the efficiency of the supporting processes. As a result of its ideal geographical location, Malaysia is emerging as the trade hub between the East and the West. Trans-shipping through this strategic location allows for cost and process efficiency gains, reducing the times along the supply chain. Malaysia currently has half of the world’s oil and a quarter of the worlds trade pass through its waters. The Logistics Performance Index developed by the World Bank has ranked Malaysia as 27th country worldwide for logistics efficiency, but it is ranked second - only after South Africa - among the Upper Middle income countries. New projects are being developed in order to further improve logistics in Malaysia. One of these initiatives is the Malaysian Logistics Council chaired by the Minister of International Trade and Industry of which the EUMCCI is a member. |
